Trying To Avoid A Beatdown

Sitting around with henna in my hair because my roots are out of control and I just keep thinking that Willam would not be proud of this mess.

This was last weekend's makeup. I wore it to go comic book shopping. My skin looked a mess, but I still think I was the best looking girl in the shop. The grandma there with her son and grandkids had nothing on me.

The Used (January 2013)

I wanted to start this post by sharing something that I found on one of my favorite "fatshion" blogs, Thick Threads! She shared a personal time of her own when she was made to feel inferior because of her weight and how it inspired her to be stronger today. She also shared a link to Haley Morris-Cafiero's photo project. Please take a look if you have time.

And now for your regularly scheduled post. Did pretty good for January I think. February is shaping up to have a decent amount of products as well.

Aqua Net Professional Hair Spray Extra Super Hold: Been there. Done that. Still love.

Salon Grafix Spray Powder Shampoo (For Brunette Shades): Technically I am not brunette. Technically this didn't match my hair color. Technically it was very obvious that this didn't match my hair color. I will not be buying this again. That said, I would totally recommend it for those of you who ARE brunette. I used it on my bangs which seem to get more oily than the rest of my hair. It was awesome at absorbing any ickiness. The color coverage was also great, it would be perfect between dye jobs to cover roots if that's something of concern to you.

Aussie Catch The Wave Mousse + Leave-In Conditioner: I remember my mom had an Aussie conditioner when I was a kid and I used to love using it (even though I wasn't supposed to.) It was one of those ones with dye in it for color enhancing. It was probably for brunettes... I digress. I got this mousse because it made me think of growing up. Unfortunately this didn't quite live up to the memories. I didn't find the mousse gave much shape to my waves, perhaps the leave-in conditioner provided too much weight.

Fresh Sugar Rose Tinted Lip Treatment: This was 50% of the Sephora 2012 free birthday gift, the other item being the original formula Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment. For those not familiar, when you join their VIB program, one of the perks is a gift on your birthday. It's the same gift for everyone. I actually think the 2013 gift also involves these lip treatments. I kind of hope not, at least not this particular one. First off, the consistency of this was melty and mushy. I admit it could have been a fluke that it was melty when I opened it, but I just didn't find anything to redeem it from there. It didn't make my lips feel any better. It didn't give me a rosy tint. It was just... boring.

Essence Multi Action False Lashes Mascara: This one isn't actually used, it's a throw-out. I opened it and went to put it on and it was totally dried out. I was super bummed because I loved the last Essence mascara I used. The problem with everything from this brand is that nothing is sealed. That is just inviting people to stick their fingers in things and boy do they. You can tell from the finger prints in the gel eye liners, the broken bullets on the lipsticks and, apparent to me now, the dried out mascaras. Guess I'll have to steer clear of Essence until they start sealing their stuff.

L'Oreal Voluminous False Lashes Mascara: Good formula, decent results, terrible brush. The bristles are kind of hard and hurt my delicate lash/lid connection area... thing. I don't even know what to call what it was hurting, but it was not pleasant. If they got a different brush, I would definitely try this one again. I think it would probably work for those who don't have angry eyelashes.

Burt's Bees Rosewater Toner: Saved the best for last. And you thought it was just going to be a bunch of ranting. This toner was amazing. It smelled great, it got the last of the dirt/cleanser off my skin, it moisturized, it prepped my skin for lotion, it smelled great. I know I said it smelled great twice, I loved it that much. I don't know why all of a sudden I really like the smell of rose. I used to hate all florals. I think I've become an old woman.

I parked on a sidewalk today

Seriously, I parked on the sidewalk at the comic book store Matt and I went to. In my defense, the road and the sidewalk were covered in snow and I couldn't tell if they were parking spaces in front of the shop or what. There was also no curb. Still, extremely embarrassing.

I'm waiting for my Tamagotchi to fall asleep, so this feels like a good time to fill out the survey thing that Larie tagged me in. I'm not going to tag anyone else for this because I hate doing that. That doesn't mean I don't like doing these now and again, though, as it's a fun and to the point way to find out more about your favorite bloggers. And I feel like it should be obvious by now that Eye Heart It is one of my favorites.

1. Favorite lipstick of all time. (Or just right now. I know we're fickle).
I'm glad for the "Or just right now" because I really am always finding a new lip color I can't live without. Lately I have been using MAC's Cozy Up a lot. Surprises me as it's kind of a caramel color which it totally not my thing (I'm more of a hot pink kinda girl)
In case you missed my last post, that's what I have on there.

2. What album/band/song have you been listening to lately?
I've been listening to the radio a lot lately which is scary to even myself. So I guess whatever the cool new songs are, I am listening to those? When they start annoying me too much I flip to my Rufus Wainwright cd (Out of the Game)

3. If you found just $10 in your pocket right now, what would you spend it on?
NOTHING. Omg I spent so much money today. If I found $10 I would hoard it because that's probably all I have left for the week...

4. Last book you really enjoyed?
I've read a few books lately that were just kind of meh. The last one that really kept my attention was the last book in the Larten Crepsley Saga. It's a kind of continuation to the Cirque Du Freak series, but they technically take place before those books. Yes, they are teenager books. You're going to judge me for this when I just told you I was playing Tamagotchi?

5. Favorite healthy snack?
If it's healthy, is it really a snack? I'll level with you, I'm not a healthy eater. I'm not really a snacker either, though. Sometimes I'll eat cherry tomatoes out of the container. I guess that could be healthy?

6. Favorite not healthy snack? (Can you tell I'm hungry right now?)
Milkshakes.

7. Favorite body lotion (I need some recs, hahahaha.)?
I'm the wrong person to ask about body lotion. My skin on my arms is so dry that I can literally sign my name on my arm with my finger nail and you will still be able to read it in 5 minutes. I hate body lotion. If I do HAVE to use it, though, I have enjoyed Bath and Body Works Pink Chiffon and Coconut Lime.

8. Favorite children's movie?
This one isn't fair for me, I ONLY like children's movies. I'm going to have to say Howl's Moving Castle because that's pretty much my favorite movie ever. If we really need to go mass-appeal, I like The Chipmunk Adventure.

9. Mac or PC? :D
Mac. Which I just typed as MAC. Oddly, though, I am vehemently anti-iPhone.  You'll have to pry my Droid out of my hands as the little green Droid mascot dude is abducting me.

10. Last item you returned?
I bought a dress from Fashion to Figure and it looked whatever is one step past terrible on me. First of all, it was made of wetsuit material which was just... odd. Worst, though, was how it clung to my fairly large lower stomach pouch. I try and accept my fat body and do the best I can with it. I am having trouble with my pouch, though (or fupa, or gunt... I've heard them all)

11. Favorite ice cream flavor?
Caramel. Or vanilla with caramel on it.

One last serious note. Rachel of Rachel's Symbiotic Life has been having a rough time with her son being sick. If you have a minute, please leave her some encouragement in the comments of her post. I've never met her, but she's someone that I definitely consider her a friend through the blogging world, and we have to help our blog friends out when they need it (even if it's just with happy thoughts!)

Hey Heartentine

Valentine's Day isn't a favorite of mine. Never has been. It has nothing to do with being alone obviously. I'm just not a romantic. Like at all. The first time Matt gave me a flower, I thought it was for my mom and gave it away. In my defense, it was Mother's Day and I got confused. Have I told you guys this before? I feel like I have.

While I did venture to Matt's place to give him a shoddily made construction paper card, we didn't really spend a lot of time. I got to meet his brother's new dog and that was pretty much it. Most of my night was spent with my mom and some of our friends going bowling. See? Not romantic. I did try to theme my makeup somewhat, though.

February 10, 2013

I'm more of a Betty, but I want to be a Veronica

Ugh, the weekend is over already. We got slammed with snow, over 2 feet, and it's been madness. If I ever see a snow shovel again, it will be too soon. I am so exhausted that I was carrying a gallon of milk out of the store and made it half way to the car when I had to drop it. I tried to pick it up again, but it felt like it weighed a million pounds. I had to scream for someone to come help me, lol.

(none of them have seen snow before - and yes I threw a tiny snowball at Sid)

Enough about blizzards, though. Before all this snow nonsense, my MAC Archie's Girls order arrived. This was the first collection I have done a "haul" from since Venomous Villains (I put haul in quotes because while I think I got a lot, I know this is only a small sampling of all there is.) I also got a couple of non-Archie lipsticks which you will see in the normal black MAC boxes. Those are for another day, though.

(got a free button for spending over $75)

(the goods)

(isn't the packaging cute?)

(Ronnie Red and Betty Bright lipsticks)

(Veronica's Blush and Flatter Me Pearlmatte powders)

(Lucky In Love and Cheers My Dear pigments)

(Lucky In Love pigment over Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy, Cheers My Dear pigment to highlight, Betty Bright lipstick)

(Ronnie Red lipstick, Veronica's Blush Pearlmatte powder)

(Ponopols the penguin was being sassy)

I'm still trying everything out, but so far my favorites are Ronnie Red lipstick (it lasts for hours and fades to a really pretty berry color) and Lucky In Love pigment (so wonderfully frosty and 80's, lol)

Beauty Army (January 2013)

Something new I was inspired to do for 2013 was to sign up for a couple of sample box services. I got my first box last week and it is from Beauty Army. Beauty Army is $12 per month. The nice thing about this particular program is you get a time window where you can go in and select your desired samples from an offering that is determined by some profile questions you answer when you sign up. If you don't like the samples that come up, you can re-take the profile to change what if offered, though I heard some people just keep refreshing the page on their sample page and will get a new selection each time.

Mark Scanda-Lash Hook-Up Mascara in Blacklash (full size)
retails @ mfgr for $6.50

Mark (known by me as teenage Avon) is not a brand I'd ever tried before. From what I understand, you can get different items like lip glosses and mascaras and you can use a connector to literally hook the tubes together for easier access when you toss it in your purse. I only have one mascara and nothing to hook it to (nor do I want my mascara hooked to a lip gloss) All this said, I liked this mascara. It gives a good coat of color and the brush is fairly thin and really separates my lashes when using a thin coat of mascara. It would be good for those who like to do their lower lashes, too. My only complaint was the mascara formula was a little thick, I needed to be careful not to have too much on there or it started gluing my lashes together. This mascara earns a pass from me, just wish you could get it at a normal store.

Yes to Tomatoes Clear Skin Daily Pore Scrub (.1oz)
retails @ mfgr for $9.99/4oz - sample is valued @ approx. $.25

This is another "Yes to..." product and since I have had more hits than misses in the brand, I was excited to try it. This scrub was very scrubby... I know that is blowing your mind. For some reason some people get scrubs and want the very lightest of exfoliation. I am not that kind of person and this was my kind of texture. I do think it smelled tomato-y. Again, mind blowing. The Yes to Cucumber products do smell like cucumber, but the Yes to Carrots don't smell like carrots and the Yes to Blueberries smells like terrible. Perhaps it was just my imagination. I did feel like my pores seemed a little more noticeable directly after using this product. I just took it as a chance to throw a pore strip on and really pull any gunk out. Once I used toner and moisturizer, everything seemed fine. I'm not currently in need of a full-sized facial scrub, but this item earns a pass from me and will be on my mind for the future.

Jonathan DIRT Texturizing Paste (.7oz)
retails @ Ulta for $26.00/3.35oz - sample is valued @ approx. $7.00

I actually got this sample for Matt as he likes hair wax-type stuff. I don't think he's used it yet, though, as he's waiting to get his hair cut. I know he uses wax in his beard to keep any sticking-up hairs in check. I supposed this stuff might work for that? I really have never been a wax/paste person, at least not since my olden days of short hair (and way less chunky) Can't say if this one is a pass or fail.

Ineke Hothouse Flower EDP (.05oz)
retails @ mfgr for $95.00/2.5oz - sample is valued @ approx. $1.90

This is a FLORAL fragrance. Like being locked in a flower nursery on a hot and humid day kind of strong. It made me think of FlowerbyKenzo fragrance, though not the same kinds of floral. That kind of power, though. It honestly gave me a massive headache and I was stuck at work trying to scrub myself in the sink to get it off. I liked the smell initially, but this ended up a fail for me.

Macadamia Deep Repair Masque (.5oz)
retails @ mfgr for $4.00/1oz - sample is valued @ approx. $2.00

I don't know what a macadamia nut smells like, but this masque smelled nice whatever it was. It also felt really nice and conditioning when I put it in my hair. I used in after shampooing, but in place of conditioner. There was enough in the .5oz packet for one application to my hair which is now a little past my shoulders. Once my hair dried, I'm not sure I see anything more special about it than when I use my normal conditioner. It doesn't feel any silkier. Perhaps it needs more than one try to do anything, but that's all I could get out of the packet. I'll have to think more about getting this one again, but it gets a pass.

Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels (1 pair)
retails @ mfgr for $30.00/8 pairs - sample is valued @ approx. $3.75

The point of these is to cool and alleviate bags and dark spots under your eyes. I have neither of those*. I just thought this product looked cool and wanted to try it - and cool it was. I put these under my eyes for about 10 minutes and could definitely feel a chilled sensation and I kind of loved it. It was soothing feeling while I just chilled and read my book. Once I peeled the gels off, I didn't see any difference. It's hard to improve perfection, though... Just kidding guys. Something I learned is that these do leave a little bit of a gel film that might be best to rinse off before trying to do such things as applying eye cream. Man that burned...

*Upon completion of this statement I found a picture that my friend posted on Facebook that proved me very very wrong. I do indeed have some hardcore baggage under my eyes. Perhaps I will need to think more seriously about these things after all... These earn a pass from me.

Nelson Beverly Hills Argan Oil 7 in 1 Non-Foaming Shampoo (1oz)
retails @ mfgr for $20/8oz - sample is valued @ approx. $2.50

This shampoo smelled EXACTLY like the toothpaste my dental hygienist uses... and that is not a good thing. Unfortunately it didn't go uphill from there. Because this is a non-foaming shampoo, it seemed to absorb into my hair and I couldn't figure out if it was spreading or not. There were these little bead thingies in it that actually didn't dissolve/absorb, but they also didn't rinse out and I kept finding them after I got out of the shower (they made my scalp itch.) I tried this shampoo two ways - at night when I air dried my hair and in the morning when I blow-dried. Both ways, my hair ended up feeling heavy and greasy afterwards (my hair is usually normal-dry) This shampoo was probably the biggest fail in my box for me.

Total box value: approx. $23.90
